Foal Colors

Foal colors are often different from mature horse colors and it can be confusing to people who are not familiar with newborns and young foals.

So, I've decided to explain some foal colors, and give some examples to help people see how the foals change.

Foal Coats fade and get dull quickly, then shed, but the new hair tends to sun-bleach easily the first year.

Here are many examples...

Sorrel Foal

This newborn Sorrel is 7 days old.  Genotype: eeA_

Newborn Sorrels or Chestnuts
are almost always born with very
pale colored legs.  This can make white markings difficult to see at birth sometimes.  This foal does Not have white socks.
This is the same foal at 2 mo. old.

Her foal coat is now Dull, and
will start shedding soon.
The filly is 3+ mo. old here.

She has now shed most of her coat.
The filly is 4 mo. old here.

The filly has shed all her baby hair, but is somwhat
sun-bleached.
Here is the same filly at almost 8 mo. old.
Winter Coats are often dull and not very pretty.

Chestnut Foal

This chestnut filly is 3 weeks old here.  Genotype eeaa.

She was born the same red color as most
sorrels and chestnuts.  She also has
white on 3 of her feet, but is hard to see on a couple of her feet.

The filly is now 2+ months.

She is now starting to shed her dull baby coat.
Her new coat is a very dark, rich Chestnut color.
She is dark Red, Not black.
At this stage, they look very odd.
Another picture at 2+ months old.

Her mane when she was born was the typical 'red' color.
As her new mane is growing in... it is a very dark red color, and can be seen very well in this photo.
The filly is 3 1/2 mo. old here.

She has shed all her baby hair here.
However, she has some sun-bleaching too.
Foals sleep a lot.  In the extreme heat, they often sweat where they are touching the ground, and when they get up, the salty sweat combined with the sun will fade the new hair.  In this photo there is a very distinct line where her side is faded, but her upper hip, upper neck and back, and legs remain the darker color.

Blue Roan Foal

This has got to be one of the most confusing... 'horse of a different color' series...

This colt is a few hours old here.

True Blue Roans are usually born virtually Black.
The colt is 4 weeks old here.

His black coat is now getting a little
dull and faded.

This Blue Roan colt is 3 1/2 mo. old here.

His dull baby coat is so faded that he almost looks like a Bay color.  He is just starting to shed his baby coat.  Foals start to shed around the face first.
He is 3 1/2 months old here.

This colt has shed a lot of his dull faded foal coat.  The dull baby coat has a reddish tint now.
It's common for foals to shed around the face first,  then the neck, hips and shoulders and the lower legs and belly are usually last to shed.
Here is another picture
(4 days later).

This one really shows the new Blue Coat, and the dull, yucky baby coat he is still shedding on his belly and lower legs.  He is also sun-faded around the face.

Here he is at almost 4 months old.

He has shed almost all his baby coat, except a little on his belly and on his lower legs.
Sun-bleached around the face.
Believe it or not...
this is the same colt at 6 months old.

This picture was taken in very early morning light which has an orange cast to it, but... this colt Is very sun-faded in this picture.
Also, he stressed pretty bad after weaning, and lost some of his condition, fat, and 'bloom'.  He is very sun/sweat faded along his sides from sleeping and sweating, and Also... starting to get some new dark Winter hair in, especially on his back and top of his hips.
About 6 weeks later...
This colt now has grown in a new winter coat.

This colt has a winter coat here and also has the darker coat along his back which is common.
About a month later... at almost 9 months..

His winter coat is longer and thicker, and a little darker.  Roans tend to get much darker in the winter.

Buckskin Foal

Buckskins are born a shade of 'Tan' that can range from a creamy beige color to a darker, almost light Bay color.
